No. But it can. It depends on you and who the ceremony is for. The ceremony is meant to reflect not only your beliefs (secular, spiritual or religious) but also address those of someone you have/do care about; as well as for those who will gather for your ceremony - whether that is a wedding, celebration of life, baptism/naming or any other milestone.
I have learned over the years that, especially for celebrations of life, some traditional "touch stones" are helpful for some who are gathered or for the person whose life is being celebrated. But these are not necessary either. We can work on what is included and excluded together to ensure the ceremony is honest, respectful and has integrity.
I listen closely to your needs and I craft a ceremony that will definitely include the different traditions and cultures you want to honour. All is possible.
Absolutely. Today, most milestone ceremonies are held in peoples' own venue of choice - such as parks, restaurants, homes, and banquet halls (etc.). I have officiated ceremonies in all of these locations and on beaches, in condo party rooms, in unique locations too - like libraries. And I still also officiate ceremonies in places of worship, where permitted (typically a rented space as most churches will rent out their sanctuaries or other spaces within the building). If it is outside of the GTA (greater Toronto area) then I do require an extra fee for mileage.
Example of locations: Many parents have asked me whether I will baptize their baby or toddler at home. They often feel a bit guilty not having the child baptized in a church or place of worship. Often because they were baptized in the church or their parents would like this for their grandchild. What I tell parents is that baptism in the early Christian movement always took place at home or near a body of water. House churches were how the early movement began. So, you are actually following in the footsteps of a much older tradition of baptism when you have your child baptized at home.
I have both an academic background in religious studies (Humanities not Theology) and in ritual studies as well as 15 years of practical experience. I am licensed in the Province of Ontario for weddings and I am ordained by Clergy Support Memorial Church - a non-denomination church that is part of the emerging church/spiritual movement. I have officiated at over 500+ ceremonies. Please take a look at my "Meet Janice" page as well as some of my videos. I'd be happy to have a further discussion with you about my training and background.
I do. I also offer relationship and spiritual guidance.
Some couples have asked for 3 sessions with me of "pre-marriage" guidance. They don't want counseling sessions. They have some specific topics in mind but some are also looking for guidance on marriage itself and the first year.
Some people have asked for some guidance and support following the death of someone they have cared about or loved. Again, they do not want to go to counseling or therapy and are not necessarily ready or want to go to a group session. They simply want some support and guidance to process their feelings at this time.
